30 minutes from downtown Chicago. We hope you enjoy our little town as much as we do — here's where we eat, what you can walk to from the house, and what's worth the drive.
Your host,

Tip: the smoker is the reason to go — brisket, pork belly and the jalapeño-cheddar link, which turns up together in a sandwich called The Carlitos Way. There is a full deli counter too, so a group that cannot agree still eats well.

Tip: our picks are the shrimp fettuccine and the grilled vegetable wrap with chips. Always call ahead in case they closed early or the chef called in sick.

Tip: old-school diner, and classic breakfast and lunch done well. Call ahead if you're headed over after 1pm — they close early some days.

Tip: the wings and the pizza are what we go for.

Tip: a real swimming beach, not a rock shoreline — and on a clear day you can see downtown Chicago across the water. Parking is paid in season; walking is free.

Tip: a full day if you want the trails, half a day for the beach. Check the park site for entrance fees and seasonal closures before you set off.

Five things on while you’re here. The full calendar is just below — if a festival weekend lines up with your trip, book early.

Indoors, so it works in February: arcade cabinets, neon and string lights downstairs. Upstairs, three bedrooms and a round table that seats everyone.
Thirty minutes to downtown. Then back to a quiet street and a driveway you don't pay for.
Marc, who grew up here, says take the South Shore Line — it drops you at Millennium Station. Driving? Book parking ahead on SpotHero.
